Monster Ranks and Plus Values in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World
A monster's rank is a letter from G to X. Synthesis can raise it: synthesis gives a monster a Plus Value, and a high one can push the child above its parents' rank.

Both parents must be at least level 10, and both are gone once the child is born.
Every demo monster we've recorded so far is rank G or F, or its rank isn't recorded yet. Those ranks come from our recorded demo data.
Plus Value and ranking up
Synthesis gives the child a Plus Value, which can grow with each further synthesis.

A high enough Plus Value adds a bonus to the monster's base attributes.

With a high Plus Value, a child can come out at a higher rank than its parents.

When a parent's Plus Value is large, some children in the synthesis menu show a plus symbol. That marks a child that may be a higher rank than its parents.
